Spring School "Habits Between Phenomenology and Pragmatism"

Dates: 17-18 March 2025

Venue: Department of Humanities, Social Sciences and Cultural Industries, University of Parma, Italy

We are pleased to announce the Spring School on "Habits Between Phenomenology and Pragmatism", scheduled to be held on 17-18 March 2025. This event offers an intensive two-day program, organized within the “Transforming Habits” Prin 2022 Project in cooperation with the Istituto Italiano degli Studi Filosofici, explores the intersection of phenomenology and pragmatism through the lens of habit. It is open to advanced graduate students, early-career researchers, and scholars interested in philosophy, cognitive science, psychology, and related disciplines.

About the Spring School

Habits play a crucial role in shaping our understanding of human action, perception, and thought. Both phenomenology and pragmatism offer profound insights into the nature and function of habits, albeit from different philosophical traditions. This Spring School aims to bridge these two perspectives, fostering dialogue and exploring questions such as:

How do habits structure our experience and actions?

What role do habits play in shaping our perception of the world and others?

How can the pragmatist notion of habit as an active, future-oriented process be integrated with the phenomenological account of habit as a pre-reflective, embodied experience?

What are the implications of these insights for broader questions in philosophy, cognitive science, and the social sciences?

Program Highlights
