In einem "klassischen" Aufsatz aus dem Jahr 1959 beschreibt Carl Gustav Hempel die Logik der funktionalen Analyse wie folgt: "The object of the analysis is some ‚item‛ i, which is a relative persistent trait or disposition (e. g., the beating of the heart) occurring in a system s (e. g. the body of a living vertebrate) and the analysis aims to show that s is in a state, or internal condition c _i and in an environment representing certain external conditions c _e such that under conditions c _i and c _e (jointly to be referred c) the trait i has effects which satisfy some ‚need‛ or ‚functional requirement‛ of s, i. e., a condition n which is necessary for the system's remaining in adequate, or effective, or proper, working order." (Hempel 1959, 280). Diese Beschreibung ist sehr abstrakt und damit einerseits ein wenig nichtssagend, andererseits aber auch sehr umgreifend, so dass sie auf ganz unterschiedliche Phänomene aus allen Seinsbereichen (physikalischen, technischen, biologischen, soziologischen, psychologischen, organisationalen usw.) zutrifft. So kann man gleichermaßen von der Funktion eines Organs, eines Tragbolzens oder Kondensators sprechen oder auch von der Funktion von Lebenslügen, Gedenkreden oder Tarifverhandlungen.
